Protect your kids online

The internet can be a bit of a minefield at the best of times. Lewd content, spam, malware, scammers and a host of other nasties call the world wide web their home. It pays to be vigilant, but how do you ensure those without as much worldly knowledge are completely safe from harm online?

There are a few measures you can take to keep your kids safe when using the internet. They cover content, bullying and internet/life balance. We’ve listed our top tips below.

Set up a profile for your kids

On your computer or laptop, you have the option to set up different users who log in with different passwords. Set up a profile for your kids that has a different password to your own – this allows you to make changes to their profile that won’t affect yours.

Exercise your parental controls

Most computers and consoles have a series of parental and content controls. These can block certain websites, content and email addresses. Set these to whatever you want on your child’s profile, and they won’t be able to change them without you. These options can also be used to set time limits on how long your kid can be online.

Child safe search engines

These are search engines that filter out content deemed inappropriate for children. A full list can be found here.

Monitor internet activity

This can be something of a touchy subject. You want to ensure your kids are safe online, but you don’t want to violate their privacy. If you suspect your kids have been looking at things they shouldn’t, or talking to people you’d rather they didn’t you can have a look at their internet history in your browser’s options or tool menus.
